St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm
The St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm is a world-renowned paleontological site that has yielded some of the most important dinosaur fossils ever found. The site is located in southwestern Utah, near the city of St. George. It is one of the few places in the world where dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous period have been found.
The St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site was discovered in 2000 by Dr. Scott Sampson and his team of paleontologists from the Museum of Natural History. They searched for fossils of a new type of dinosaur found in Australia. They found something even better – the remains of a previously unknown dinosaur species, which they named Utahraptor ostrommaysi. This discovery was extremely important, as it helped fill a gap in our understanding of dinosaur evolution. Utahraptor lived in the very late Cretaceous period, which was around 75 million years ago. Utahraptor would have been one of the last dinosaurs to live on Earth before the mass extinction that killed all non-avian dinosaurs.
Although the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm doesn’t look like much now, its history stretches back centuries to when the dinosaurs roamed the earth. The first recorded instance of dinosaur bones being discovered in the area was in 2000 when local optometrist Sheldon Johnson was leveling a hill on his property. After removing several feet of dirt and rock, he uncovered what he initially thought were petrified tree stumps.
Further examination revealed that these were fossilized dinosaur bones, and Johnson soon realized he had stumbled upon something special. He contacted paleontologists from nearby Brigham Young University, and they began excavating the site. Since then, hundreds of fossils have been unearthed, making it one of North America’s most important dinosaur discovery sites.
