The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) gives workers and their families the right to continue health insurance coverage after a job loss or other qualifying event. COBRA allows people to maintain their health insurance for up to 18 months, but they have to pay the full premium, which can be expensive. Employers must offer COBRA if they have 20 or more employees.
